Project Description

KAST
New York City or Kings County, New York, early-18th century
Gumwood and pine
Historic Huguenot Street Permanent Collection
Gift of Elise Kinkaid, 2308

This kast shares structural details with kasten in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum and the Monmouth County Historical Society, Freehold, New Jersey. They have been attributed to an unidentified craftsman in New York City or Kings County, New York, between 1710 and 1740 (see American Kasten in the bibliography). Before coming to Huguenot Street proper, the kast was located in the Terwilliger House at Locust Lawn, the federal mansion built by Josiah Hasbrouck and passed to his son Levi Hasbrouck. The donor, Elise Kinkaid, was a Hasbrouck descendant. An old label found in drawer says “Mrs. J [or L] Hasbrouck.”
