Project Description
KAST
Ulster County, New York, late-18th century
Pine, cherry, and maple
Collection of Mary Etta Schneider
Families with more modest means in rural areas at times commissioned simpler cupboards inspired by the more stately kasten created in larger towns and cities. These simpler forms are sometimes called “country” kasten. This particular cupboard features a more modest cornice than the typical kast with silhouette feet mimicking a ball shape. The locking mechanism on this cupboard is original.
